Jaqueline Cristian plays on Wednesday for a place in the semifinals at the UniCredit Iași Open. Four seeds remained in the race for the trophy
One of Romania's representatives at the Paris Olympic Games, Jaqueline Cristian, will try to break into the ace box at the UniCredit Iași Open, a WTA 250 tournament with total prizes of 232,244 euros and 250 WTA points.
Favorite 3 in Iași, Cristian, 26 years old, 66th WTA, will meet in the quarters, not before 17.00, Elina Avanesyan, 21 years old, world number 75 and favorite 5.
The second consecutive quarter-final in the circuit for Jaqueline Cristian, after the one in Palermo
It would be the fourth Romanian presence in the semifinals in the 3 editions so far, after Ana Bogdan (2022 and 2023) and Irina Begu (2023).
Today, Jaqueline will compete in her second consecutive quarter-final at a WTA 250 tournament, after the one in Palermo. Last week, our player missed qualifying for the semifinals of the Italian tournament after being defeated by the main favorite, China's Qinwen Zheng, 6-1, 6-1.
In Iasi, Jaqueline passed the Italian Nuria Brancaccio in the first round (6-2, 6-4), and in the round of 16 she defeated her good friend Elena Gabriela Ruse, after a marathon match that lasted over 3 hours, score 6- 4, 6-7 (1), 6-2.
On the other hand, 21-year-old Elyna Avanesian, world number 75 and the 5th favourite, achieved a career-best performance in February this year when she was ranked 60th in the world.
Like Jaqueline, Elina had an easy match in the first round, 6-1, 6-2 with the Iberian Leyre Romero Gormaz, and in the round of 16 she needed two and a half hours to overcome the Croatian Petra Martic, score 6-2 , 5-7, 6-4.
Mirra Andreeva, corridor to the semi-finals
The day of the quarters will be opened by the main favorite Mirra Andreeva, 17 years old, 31st WTA, who will play from 11.00 with the Croatian Lea Boskovic, 24 years old, 182 WTA, a player who entered the draw as a lucky loser.
Mirra won the first two matches in Iași, losing only 7 games, and is the clear favorite against the Croatian, who was the main favorite in the qualifiers but lost in the second round.
After this match, Olga Danilovic (Serbia, 23 years, 150 WTA) and the 8th favorite, Anna Bondar, from Hungary (27 years, 98 WTA) will face each other.
French duel in the quarters
If on Tuesday we had a Romanian duel in the round of 16, on Wednesday we will have a confrontation between two players from France, with the goal being to qualify for the semi-finals.
Chloe Paquet, 30 years old, 115th WTA place, will meet her compatriot Selena Janicijevic, coming from the qualifications, 21 years old, world number 189, the match being the third on "Central". Selena has spent the most hours on the court in Iași, she has already won four matches, two in the qualifiers and two on the scoreboard.
Also on Wednesday, the last three quarterfinals of the doubles are scheduled at the Ciric Sports Base, an event in which the pair Anca Todoni / Irina Bara is already qualified for the semifinals.
