Egypt’s Mayar Sherif Wins the Fifth Edition of the UniCredit Iași Open. Paula Badosa Retires in the Second Set
Egyptian player Mayar Sherif, ranked World No. 97, is the new champion of the WTA 250 UniCredit Iași Open, a tournament offering total prize money of €246,388. In Monday’s final, the 30-year-old defeated Spain’s Paula Badosa, aged 28 and ranked World No. 115, after the latter retired with the score at 6-4, 4-0.
Paula Badosa Retires in the Second Set of the Final
Originally scheduled for Sunday at 5:30 PM, the final between Mayar Sherif and Paula Badosa was played on Monday morning after being postponed due to a red weather warning for torrential rain and strong winds.
Sherif won the opening set 6-4, and after taking a 4-0 lead in the second set, Badosa, who was struggling with physical issues, was forced to retire.
Second WTA Career Title for Mayar Sherif
At the age of 30, Mayar Sherif claimed the second WTA title of her career, following her triumph in Parma in 2022. Meanwhile, Paula Badosa remains on four WTA titles from five finals played.
For her victory in Iași, Sherif will receive 250 WTA ranking points and €32,520 in prize money, while runner-up Badosa will earn 163 WTA points and €19,240.
It is also worth noting that both finalists had won WTA 125 tournaments one week earlier. Badosa triumphed in Bastad, while Sherif won the title in Contrexéville.
Following her victory at the UniCredit Iași Open, Sherif climbed to World No. 72, while Badosa moved up to No. 90 in the WTA rankings.
The Finalists’ Road to the Final
On her way to the title, Mayar Sherif defeated:
- Dalma Galfi (Hungary) – 6-2, 6-0 (First Round)
- Kaitlin Quevedo (Spain) – 6-3, 7-6 (Round of 16)
- Yulia Putintseva (Kazakhstan, No. 9 seed) – 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (Quarterfinals)
- Oleksandra Oliynykova (Ukraine, No. 3 seed) – 6-3, 6-1 (Semifinals)
Paula Badosa reached the final after defeating:
- Anhelina Kalinina (Ukraine, No. 4 seed) – 6-3, 6-1 (First Round)
- Alevtina Ibragimova – 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 (Round of 16)
- Panna Udvardy (Hungary, No. 5 seed) – 6-4, 7-6 (Quarterfinals)
- Tamara Zidansek (Slovenia) – 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (Semifinals)
Detiuc and Khromacheva Win the Doubles Title
In the doubles event, the trophy was won by the No. 3 seeds, Anastasia Detiuc of the Czech Republic and Irina Khromacheva, who defeated Alina Charaeva of Armenia and Zhibek Kulambayeva of Kazakhstan 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 in the final.
Detiuc and Khromacheva earned 250 WTA ranking points and €11,830 in prize money, while runners-up Charaeva and Kulambayeva received 163 WTA points and €6,650.
