Mirra Andreeva, the new champion of the UniCredit Iasi Open tournament. It is the first success in the WTA circuit for the young woman of only 17 years
Mirra Andreeva is the new champion of the WTA 250 UniCredit Iași Open, a competition with total prizes of 232,244 euros and 250 WTA points.
In the grand final, which started with a four-hour delay due to rain and ended at midnight, Mirra Andreeva, 17, WTA No. 31, the main favorite, defeated Elina Avanesyan, 21, world No. 75, the favorite 5, score 5-7, 7-5, 4-0, her opponent retreating to 0-4 in the decider.
Mirra Andreeva won the first WTA title of her career, while Avanesyan also achieved her best performance in Iasi, her first final on the circuit.
Mirra Andreeva got 250 WTA points and a check worth 30,650 euros, and the finalist Elina Avanesyan will remain with 163 WTA points and 18,110 euros.
After the victory in Iași, Mirra, who started the tournament in 31st place, climbed to 23rd in the world ranking, the best position in his career, where he was in June. On the other hand, Elina Avanesyan climbed to the 58th place in the WTA ranking.
In the first set, Andreeva led 2-0 and 4-2, but was tied each time, with Avanesyan eventually winning 7-5 after serving on the third set point.
The second set was equally balanced, dominated by breaks. Andreeva had a favorable moment to break decisively at 3-3 when she broke, but Avanesyan managed the rebreak and took the lead, 5-4. From this moment, the main favorite took the match on her own. She took the last three games and closed out the second set 7-5 to dominate the decider in decisive fashion, Elina retreating to 0-4.
Andreeva thus returns for the second time from a lost set, as in the semi-final with Olga Danilovic, and wins the tournament in Iași in an exciting manner, achieving the first success of her career on the circuit.
Anna Danilina and Irina Khromacheva, the doubles champions
The doubles final was won by top favorite Anna Danilina (Kazakhstan) / Irina Khromacheva 6-4, 6-2 with the 2nd favorite pair of Alexandra Panova and Yana Sizikova.
In the first set, the two pairs went head-to-head until it was 4-3 for Danilina and Khromacheva, when the main favorites broke and pulled clear at 5-3. Panova and Sizikova broke back, but lost serve again in the next game, so Anna Danilina and Irina Khromacheva took the set 6-4.
The main favorites started the second set strongly and quickly pulled away to 3-0, at which point the match was interrupted for five minutes due to a rainstorm.
The favorite pair 2 came close at 2-3 after the short rain break, but from that moment Danilina and Khromacheva did not concede a single game and won the second set 6-2.
